Promoter (event promoter in sales tax law)

In some states' sales tax law, a promoter is the person or company that organizes a market, fair or show. Those states may require the promoter to register, collect a list of vendors, verify their permits, or even collect tax. Whether you count as a promoter depends on your state and your setup.

Explained

About promoter.

Also called: event promoter, show promoter, promoter sales tax.

The duties differ widely. Some states ask only that you keep a vendor list, others require you to confirm each vendor has a permit, and a few hold the promoter liable for tax a vendor failed to collect.

Charging booth fees or admission is often what makes someone a promoter. A nonprofit or a free event may be treated differently.
