General liability insurance

General liability insurance covers claims that a business caused bodily injury or property damage to other people, such as a shopper tripping over a tent leg. It can pay for legal defense and settlements up to its limits. Most venues, cities and organizers require it from vendors.

Explained

About general liability insurance.

Also called: GL insurance, commercial general liability, CGL.

It does not cover your own equipment or inventory, your employees' injuries, or your vehicle. Those need separate property, workers' compensation or auto coverage.

Policies set a per-occurrence limit and an annual aggregate limit, and organizers usually name the minimum they want. Many vendors buy an annual policy; some buy short event-only coverage.

Coverage is only useful if the policy is active on the event date and covers what you actually do. Food, fire and amusement activities are sometimes excluded unless added.

This is general information, not insurance or legal advice; an insurance agent can tell you what your own policy covers.
