Do I need to charge sales tax at a craft fair?

It depends on your state and on what you sell. Many states tax retail sales at craft fairs and expect sellers to register before collecting, but rules differ by item and by event. Check your state's revenue agency, ask the organizer what they require, and keep clear sales records.

Basics

Sales tax is set by your state.

There is no single national rule. Each state sets whether it taxes your product, whether you must register, how often you file and whether there are small seller exemptions. Some states issue temporary permits for one-off events. Others allow organizers to collect on behalf of vendors.

  • Look up your state's department of revenue and search for sales at craft fairs or special events.
  • State-by-state starting points are at /permits/sales-tax-by-state.
Ask

What to ask and check.

  • Does my state require me to hold a seller's permit or sales tax license?
  • Is my product taxable? Food, clothing, art and services are treated differently in different places.
  • If I sell in another state or city, do I need to register there too?
  • Does the organizer collect tax, or do I?
  • How often do I file, and how do I pay?
Records

Keep clean records.

Record every sale with the date, event, item and amount, and note the tax collected. Keep receipts for supplies and booth fees. Separate business money from personal money. Your point-of-sale app can usually export a report by event.

  • Use a separate business account or card for event income and expenses.
  • Keep the permit number and filing confirmations together.
Prices

Decide whether to show prices with tax.

Some vendors price tax-inclusive to make cash simple; others add tax at checkout. Pick one approach and show it with a sign. Your point-of-sale app can calculate tax if you set the rate.
