What to sell at a craft fair.

What sells best at craft fairs is useful, giftable, easy-to-understand items at a range of prices, from small impulse buys to showpiece pieces. No product wins everywhere, so look at what each event's shoppers buy, avoid crowded categories where you are not different, and test ideas in small batches.

Principles

What shoppers tend to buy.

Craft fair shoppers are usually buying gifts, treats for themselves or something for their home. Items that are easy to understand at a glance, easy to carry and clearly handmade or local do well.

  • Useful items people use up or wear, such as soap, candles, jewelry, ceramics and textiles.
  • Giftable pieces that look good without wrapping and travel well.
  • Seasonal items timed to the event: holiday decor, spring planters, back to school.
  • A story or personal touch, such as custom names, colors or sizes made on the spot.
Range

Offer a price ladder.

Bring small, low-priced items that people can pick up on impulse, mid-range items that make up most of your sales, and a few showpiece pieces that draw people in. A range lets browsers buy something today.

Fit

Match the event and the crowd.

Read the event's vendor page and photos of past years to see who attends: families, office workers, tourists, holiday gift shoppers. Look at the category mix and ask the organizer what is already well covered. If five booths sell the same item, you need a clear reason to stand out.

Testing

Test before you stock up.

Start with small batches of a few ideas. Note what people pick up, ask about and buy at each event, and what they ask for that you do not have. Double down on what sells and retire the rest.

  • Take pre-orders for custom or limited items so you only make what is already sold.
Questions

Common questions.

What are good things to sell at a craft fair?

Giftable, useful, easy-to-understand items at a range of price points. Handmade soap, candles, jewelry, art prints, ceramics, textiles and food gifts are common categories.

How do I know what will sell at a craft fair?

Look at who attends that event, see what past vendors offer, and test small batches. Track what people pick up and buy.

Should I bring many product types?

A focused range usually reads better than a little of everything. Pick a theme and offer a few price points inside it.

Is it okay to sell something other vendors sell?

Yes, but be different in style, quality or story. Ask the organizer how many vendors in your category they accept.
