Parade/Special Event Permit (street or parking closure)

The organizer applies online with a diagram of closed streets, booths, stages, food locations, restrooms and trash containers, and supplies barricades that meet city standards. The organizer must notify abutting residents and businesses and give the city that list at least five days before the event, and is responsible for cleanup.

No general city business license; peddler permit may apply

Omaha does not require a general business license, though businesses must register with the State of Nebraska and the IRS. A peddler permit application is emailed to permit.info@cityofomaha.org; call 402-444-5350 to confirm whether event vendors need it.

Sales tax.

Nebraska sales tax permit for special events (Form 20)

Promoters and resident sellers need a Nebraska sales tax permit, obtained by filing the Nebraska Tax Application (Form 20), and sellers must keep a copy at the event. Nonresident sellers should also have a permit, though in some situations a one-time special event reporting form is available through the Department. Sellers must collect state and local sales tax, and the Department may send a representative to check compliance.

Your duty

What the rules ask of you about vendors.

Nebraska requires the promoter or operator to give the Department of Revenue the event dates, a contact name, address and phone, and a list of participating sellers (name, address, phone, Nebraska sales tax ID if available), by fax to 402-471-5929 or email to rev.events@nebraska.gov. Promoters must also pass on the Department's materials, give sellers the state and local tax rate, and collect sales tax on admission fees. Official page

Questions

Common questions.

What permits do I need to host a vendor market?

Usually an event permit from the city or county, licenses and sales tax registration for vendors, and temporary food permits for anyone selling food. Parks, streets, tents and cooking can add more. Pick your city above to see the exact list.

Do I need a permit for a pop-up market on private property?

It depends on the city. Some only require permits on public property; others, like zoning temporary-use permits, apply anywhere. The checklist shows what each city's official pages say.

How far ahead should I apply for an event permit?

Often 30 to 90 days. The median deadline across 111 places in our study is 45 days, and 43 want 60 or more.
