Sales tax permit

A sales tax permit, also called a seller's permit or sales tax license, is registration with your state tax agency that authorizes you to collect sales tax and requires you to file returns. Most states require one before selling taxable goods, including at markets. Names, fees and rules differ by state.

About sales tax permit.

Also called: seller's permit, sales tax license, retail license, sales and use tax registration.

You usually register with the state revenue or comptroller office, often online, and many states charge nothing. Once registered you collect tax at the right rate and file returns, even if some periods have no sales.

Selling out of state at an event can mean registering there too. Some states issue a temporary permit for a single event.

Organizers sometimes ask to see a permit as part of the application. Our permits hub lists state rules.
