How to start a farmers market.

To start a farmers market, build support from residents and a sponsoring organization, find a site with parking and visibility, write market rules (producer-only or not), recruit farmers and food producers, get permits and health approvals, and run it on a fixed weekly schedule for a whole season.

Foundations

Community and a sponsor.

Most farmers markets start with a sponsor such as a neighborhood association, nonprofit, church or local government, which helps with the site, insurance and credibility.

Rules

Decide what can be sold.

  • Producer-only means vendors sell what they grow or make.
  • Set a geographic limit if you want to keep it local.
  • Write rules for prepared food, samples and resale.
Season

Run it every week.

Shoppers build habits around a fixed day and time. Sell season packages so vendors commit for the season, and track attendance and absences week to week.

Questions

Common questions.

Do farmers markets need permits?

Usually a site or special event permit, and health department approvals for any food sampling or prepared food. Check with your city or county early.
