Special event permit

A special event permit is permission from a city, county or park agency to host an event on public land or streets. It usually sets rules for insurance, safety, noise, trash, traffic and vendors. Who needs one, how early to apply and what it costs vary by place.

Explained

About special event permit.

Also called: event permit, street closure permit, public event permit.

It is issued to the organizer, not the vendors. Private venues generally handle their own approvals, but a large crowd, alcohol, amplified music, street closures or tents can still trigger city requirements.

Applications often ask for a site map, a vendor count, proof of insurance, a security or traffic plan and sometimes sign-off from police, fire or health officials.

Start early: many offices want applications weeks or months ahead. Our DMV guide covers what DC, Maryland and Virginia typically ask for.
